Elkridge Landing Middle Mural is Dedicated by County Executive Ken Ulman

Students from Elkridge Landing Middle were honored on September 15 by Ken Ulman, County Executive in a dedication ceremony for the mosaic mural they created for the Elkridge Library. Patti Battaglia and her students worked alongside Mary Deacon Opasik, Artist in Residence, to create the mural “Underwater Treasures”. This mural is significant in that this is the first time HCCA Grant funds have been matched with Howard County Government funds to provide funding for public art. The mural is installed on the side of the Elkridge Library, visible from Route 1.

Howard County Art Students Honored By County Council

Students from Bushy Park Elementary, Patapsco Middle, and Oakland Mills High were honored on September 15 by the Howard County Council. Each of the students had their artwork selected to be displayed in the Banneker Room at the George Howard Building. Congratualtions to Janai, Cecilia, Caitlyn, Chelsea, Adrienne, and Jemirose from Oakland Mills High School; Andrew, Ryan, Meghan, Sam, and Zach from Bushy Park Elementary; Grace, Sonali, Ashley, Danielle, Dohyun, and Nawwal from Patapsco. Art teachers Heather Leatherman, Oakland Mills HS, Jane Knighton, Bushy Park ES, and Nancy Mitchell, Patapsco MS were instrumental having their students create artwork inspired by Howard County landmarks. The artwork will be on display in the Banneker Room until October, and then will move to the Howard County Department of Education for the remainder of the school year.

Art Inservice at Smithsonian American Art Museum/National Portrait Gallery

Exploring Identity Through the Eyes of the Artist was the theme for the inservice held on August 20, 2008. Art teachers had the opportunity to work with gallery staff on identifying works in the collection that best fit with the theme “identity.” Breakout sessions toured galleries in both of the museums. The atrium was a beautiful site for lunch, followed by time to visit more galleries and the bookstore.

Howard County Teachers Receive Fullbright Scholarships

Gino Molfino, River Hill High School and Jaye Ayres, Marriotts Ridge High School both received Fullbright Scholarships to study Mexican art and culture for five weeks this summer. The program was based in Taxco, Mexico but participants had the chance to travel to other sites in the country.

The Teacher Painting Institute met this summer from July 14 – July 25. Participants painted “plein air” in locations in and around Howard County. Guest artist David Simmons provided instruction in capturing color and light while working on location. The results of the Teacher Painting Institute will be shown at the Professional Gallery at the Central Office in the late fall. Louis West is selected to attend the 2008 NAEA Aspen Summit

Congratulations to Louis West for being the only art teacher in the nation selected by the National Art Education Association to attend the 2008 NAEA Aspen Summit. This historic conference is the first time NAEA has partnered with other education agencies to have a conversation about how art education can play a critical role in education in the 21st century. Other attendees include Eliot Eisner, Laura Chapman, MacArthur Goodwin, directors of education agencies, representatives from higher education, and leadership from the National Art Education Association.
